The Stink Bean - Petai
Is it Edamame of Indonesia?
Let’s figure it out!
Stink bean, or it is called as Petai or Pete (ペテ) in Indonesian, is beans with a skunky or gaseous aroma. Many eaters don’t like the smell of petai, but some of them also think they are deliciously nutty and nutritious.
Stink beans can be eaten raw, fried, or roasted. As it gets more mature, it is better to be mixed with other ingredients like sambal (chili paste), garlic, shrimp, or gulai (indonesian red curry).
If you want to try it, Toko Indonesia in Okubo (Indonesian shop) has frozen stink beans. You just need to defrost then fry or roast it.
